Coro Liturgico “Laudate et Benedicite”

Sassari

It was constituted in Sassari in 1998, under the impulse of fr. Marco Ardu, at that time librarian at the Monastery of Friars Minor of St. Mary of Bethlem, and by Jana Bitti, flautist and choir director, who, since the very beginning, assumed the task to teach the art of singing to a small group of people, with particular attention to Gregorian repertoire.

The Liturgical Choir has represented for the Church of St. Mary, since then, not only a Ministeriality but also an important promoting cultural reference point for different proposals in town.

The Choir animates the 10 hr Sunday Mass Liturgy, since December 5th, 1999, as well as all the most important Liturgical Festivities during the year: Christmas Day Mass, Easter Day Mass, Feast of the Immaculate Conception, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Antony of Padua, Blessed Francis Zirano.

In the last few years, the Choir has intensified its activities promoting several events, all over Sardinia. Since its constitution, the Choir Association has been devoted to the performance of Franciscan scores, no leaving out the great polyphonic literature, ranging over Gregorian scores, Medieval Laude, Llibre Vermell, Mozart, Bruckner, up to ‘900 authors such as Luciano Migliavacca, Igor Stravinskij, Pietro Allori, Antonio Sanna, Bernardino Rizzi.

Since 2009, the Choir “Laudate et Benedicite” belongs to the Sardinian Choirs Association “Benedictus”, formed by all the Choirs which gathered toghether to animate the High Mass Liturgy, celebrated by Pope Benedictus XVI for the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Bonaria, in Cagliari.

In the following years 2011 – 2013, the Choir was involved in learning new Gregorian scores in addition to deepening the knowledge of those already in repertoire and Franciscan excerpts. It studied the “Missa Dominicalis” by fr. Bernardino Rizzi, and performed it at the International Festival “Assisi Pax Mundi” in 2018.

The Choir was the promoter for the composition of “Cantico delle Creature” by the composer Giovanna Dongu, specially composed for the Choir “Laudate et Benedicite”, performed for the very first time in Assisi in 2017. The study of such a programme is focused on the accomplishment of meditative concerts on the strong themes of the liturgic year at Easter time, to be performed in Sardinia and abroad.
