Internationally acclaimed musician Carlo Forlivesi is an Italian composer, organist, cembalist, continuist, researcher, and writer. From 1987 to 1998 he pursued his studies at Bologna Conservatory, Milan Conservatory and the National Academy Santa Cecilia of Rome. He then joined IRCAM – Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (IRCAM Cursus 1997), and subsequently DIEM in Aarhus (Danish Rectors’ Conference Fellowship 1999), Tokyo College of Music (Monbukagakusho Fellowship 2002, Japanese Ministry of Culture), and the Northwestern University in Chicago (Fulbright Visiting Scholar 2005, U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs).
His international outlook is reflected in an eclectic body of works and activities which range from musical compositions and written works to choreographies and workshops. Forlivesi is also renowned as a specialist of early keyboard music and as an interpreter of contemporary compositions. Next events will include recitals at the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris, the Cathedral of Stuttgart, and the historical Sanctuary of Madonna della Ghiara in Reggio-Emilia.
He has received numerous composition and academic awards, and conducted extensive research in Europe (electroacoustic music and gestural controllers), Japan (traditional Japanese music and dance, including the ethnic music of the Ainu), and USA (orchestration and the extended techniques). Forlivesi has composed works for orchestra, choir, chamber music, dance, and traditional Japanese instruments. He created also electronic music works using the most advanced technologies available at the time, notably at IRCAM, DIEM, and GRM-Radio France.
His music has been performed worldwide and released by European, American, and Japanese recording companies. His written works are available in several languages being published by Kodansha (Tokyo), Aracne (Rome), Veronesi (Bologna), Pisa University Press, Sapporo University Press, Michigan University Press (Ann Arbor), PNM Seattle/Washington University Press, IRCAM-Centre Georges Pompidou. He has been the co-founder and director of the International Composition Competition and Workshop “Unique Forms of Continuity in Space”, a large-scale event held in Tokyo, Melbourne and Adelaide, during the Week of Italian Language in the World, under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic.
Forlivesi has taught in several Italian State Conservatories, and has lectured at the top universities in Japan, including Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Sapporo, the Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, the University of Pittsburgh, the Los Angeles Music College, the Loyola University, the Paris IV Sorbonne University, the National Superior Conservatory of Paris, the Conservatory Paris-Boulogne, the State University of Music of Stuttgart, the University of Adelaide, the University of Melbourne, and the Monash University. He shares his life between Europe and Japan.
