Coro della Cattedrale di Sorrento
Sorrento
The Choir of the Sorrento Cathedral was born in 1967, its founder, the young Priest Don Antonio Izzo, who died prematurely in 1985, was inspired by the phrase of Mons. Maillet “All the children of the world will sing the peace of God”, creating a group of children, who carried out the liturgical service in the Cathedral of Sorrento, animating Sunday Masses and also all the celebrations of the Archdiocese of Sorrento – Castellammare di Stabia.
Since its foundation, the Choir has been registered with the National Federation of Pueri Cantores and has participated in congresses and reviews organized throughout Italy.
It consists of two groups, for the most part amateurs: the Pueri Cantores, which include children and teenagers aged 6 to 13 and a group of young people and adults, many of whom grew up as children within the Choir.
The musical repertoire ranges from Sacred Music, to Gospel, to Pop, to classical authors, to contemporary authors, all performed in polyphony, with 4 voices of Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses. In its 54 years of history it has contributed to the musical, moral and religious formation of generations of children, bringing young people and the whole city of Sorrento closer to choral singing and Sacred Music.
The life of the Choir is marked during the year by some very significant moments: the most important appointment is November 22, the feast of St. Cecilia, Patroness of Sacred Music, where the new singers are officially welcomed into the Choir through a celebration with the “dressing” ceremony and they receive the white dress with the wooden cross, which is the characteristic dress of the Pueri Cantores; on December 26th of each year the traditional Christmas Concert is held which has always been held in the Cathedral of Sorrento; another moment full of meaning is the Palm Sunday meditation, which traces the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord.
The choral activities never stop, in fact in the summer the Choir offers the city and the numerous guests present, both Italian and foreign, an outdoor concert, with a large repertoire of Neapolitan songs, at the end of which the very famous “Torna a Surriento” in an original elaboration by Maestro Enrico Buondonno, written and dedicated by the Author to our Choir.
The Choir meets a couple of times a week for rehearsals and on Sundays for Mass and is made up of about 60 members in total.
The Director is Maestro Ilena Cafiero and the Organist is Maestro Mariacristina Converso.
Moreover the choir often avails itself of the collaboration with the flute of Maestro Emanuele Marigliano.
