
San Paolo’s Polyphonic Choir
Reggio Calabria
Is the choral expression of the city of Reggio Calabria and the Calabrian Church since 1961, when it was founded by Mons. Salvatore Santoro, with the function of the Musical Chapel at the service of the Cathedral, which still covers today all the most solemn liturgies.
Since 1967, under the baton of Mons. Don Vincenzo Barbieri, the Choir becomes a valuable point of reference for the social, spiritual and artistic life of Calabria, as well as a remarkable cultural presence of the whole country.
Directed by Professor Carmen Cantarella since 1996, succeeding M Salvatore Ascrizzi, the Choir continues its constant and serious activity both liturgically and concerts.
Attendance and victories in prestigious National Polyphonic Contests (“Guido d’Arezzo”, “Fides” – Pescara, “S.Tommaso d’Aquino” – Roccasecca, “Città di Porto Empedocle”, “S. Bartolomeo” – Benevento, “Città di Polizzi Generosa” Città di Paola – Cosenza, various editions of the Composition and Editing Competition of Calabrian Christmas Songs OCC – FENIARCO); Festivals (Barcelona, Llangollen, Riga, Kefalonia); Partecipations to important National and International Coral Shows (AISC in various Calabrian cities and Vatican); Tours abroad (Spain, France, England, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Switzerland); Cultural exchanges and twinnings with various Italian and foreign choirs; Publications and recordings and collaborations with other regional and national Choral and Musical Associations are the most important and significant steps of the choir appreciated by the public and critics for the remarkable technical-vocal qualities and the interpretative choices of its vast repertoire.
